From freelancing, to working in-house for video studios, to editing for advertising agencies and developing department operations, there have been dozens of programs and multiple production systems. All levels of compositing are understood from years of experience behind the camera.
Studio
You need to know compositing and effects work in both 2D and 3D. Motion & text design. Proficiency with 3rd party plug-ins, coloring grading and filters, roto-scoping, blah, blah, blah. A strong music background helps me with sound editing and SFX. Photography and videography experience lends to understanding all steps of post production.
Freelance
Making quick creative design & editorial decisions, for any project, without the assistance of a producer or art director, is a must. Solution driven without a lead, many positions become a one-stop-shop.
Operations
File and server management is important when there are multiple editors. The operations tempo rolls with a consistent application of naming conventions, file organization, versioning control, etc. Composition templates and project cleanup becomes more important.
